WHAT IS MATHCOUNTS?

MATHCOUNTS is unique in that its focus is an academic competition aimed at improving a student’s math skills and problem solving abilities, while teaching the importance of teamwork. It culminates in competitions similar to athletic competitions, with awards, trophies, and possibilities to advance to the next level of competition.

Each fall, the middle school math coaches work with their ”Mathletes” on mathematical problem solving and teamwork skills. Each school year, the program begins at local middle schools, where math teachers begin skill-building exercises with their students. By January, each school selects its official MATHCOUNTS participants to compete in the Competition Series. The team and coach continue to practice math skills and build their expertise in preparation for Montana regional competitions which take place in February. These Chapter Competitions are conducted in Bozeman, Butte, Billings, Glendive, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Missoula.

Thirty-five years ago the NSPE initiated the MATHCOUNTS program as a mathematics skills competition conducted each academic year. Last year, 574 students from 63 schools all over Montana participated in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series. Many more Montana students enjoy the free resources offered with the National MATHCLUB, and the MATHVIDEO Challenge.

The Montana Society of Engineers (MSE) provides all of the volunteer labor to conduct the Chapter and State Competitions. Each year, Montana’s winning MATHCOUNTS team of students travel to the National Competition with their coach compliments of NSPE and the National MATHCOUNTS Foundation. MSE’s contribution to the National Competition includes sending an MSE member to act as a host chaperone, help with scoring, and participate in planning meetings.
